The Bible Book Club Experiment

Print

Some members of Union Congregational UCC in Montclair, NJ, have agreed to join me in creating a Bible Book Club. Starting on Feb. 11, we'll meet once a month for 5 months, talking about the Bible and our lives.  We'll be using shortened versions of  Reading the Bible as an Adult to generate conversation.

Over the coming months, I'll be writing about our experiences.  Stay tuned!

Julia M. O'Brien, Ph.D., teaches at Lancaster Theological Seminary and cares deeply about how the Christian church interprets Scripture.  But she is increasingly interested in how the Bible is read and used in the public square, as well as how people like her can contribute to public discussions about the Bible in general and the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament in particular.

What can an Old Testament scholar add to discussion about novels that draw on the Bible?  About the use of particular passages in political and social debates?

This website and blog provide space to talk about the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, especially its contemporary face.  How does this old book “play” today?  How are people understanding it?  Using it?  How does it get interpreted in movies, on TV, in music?  How do the ideas/concepts of these books resonate in contemporary culture?
