The Bible Book Club Project

For over a year, I've been experimenting with an approach to reading the Bible that I call "The Bible Book Club." I've been asking groups to read long-ish sections of Old Testament and New Testament narratives and to discuss them as they might a novel, with the help of reading questions that I provide.

I hope to write about what happens when religious and non-religious groups try to read Bible stories this way.  Are folks able to discuss their reactions to characters and plot and the way the writer has told a story, or do prior beliefs about the Bible (positive or negative) short-circuit the discussion?  Can conversations about a biblical story be open-ended?   Most importantly, do folks find reading the Bible as literature interesting or otherwise valuable?  Is the Bible a good read or not?

In addition to meeting face-to-face with groups, I've contacted a handful of existing book clubs at churches and offered them access to some of my materials in exchange for feedback on the process.

If you're part of one of those groups, login in the area provided to the lower left of the screen. If you're from a different group and would like to try out the materials, contact me.
